The following description of this survey appeared in the 1991 edition of Dynamic Database: A Catalogue of Survey Data Files, Voorburg: International Statistical Institute.
Name of survey: Encuesta Nacional de Fecundidad de Costa Rica
Executive agency: Dirección General de Estadística y Censos
Date of fieldwork: 1976
Universe: All women, 20-49
Coverage: National, 97%
Contents: WFS Core Mark 1 + fertility regulation and family planning modules
Supplementary surveys: Household members (n = 23,070, self-weighting)
This survey was one of the few in the WFS developing countries series to
exclude all women under the age of 20 from the individual enquiry. However,
summary fertility information for all women aged 15-19 (and for those aged 50+)
was collected in the household survey.
A complete history of induced abortions was collected, together with
attitudinal data on abortion under specified circumstances. Never-married women
(aged 20-49) were asked whether they had experienced sexual intercourse. The
length of post-partum abstinence following the most recent birth was asked.
